Section 504 and Students with Disabilities
Section 504 and Students with Disabilities
Grapeview School District 54, under federal law, provides Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 by adopting Policy 2162- Education of Students with Disabilities. Individual (504) plans ensure students with disabilities have equal access to educational programs and activities. These plans offer tailored accommodations, aids, and services to level the playing field for students with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit one or more major life activities.
A "substantial limitation" is interpreted broadly; impairment does not need to severely restrict a major life activity to qualify a student for protections.
How to Request a 504 Plan
To determine if a student needs a 504 plan, the district follows a three-step process: refer, team assembly, and evaluate.
- Initial Contact & Referral: For inquiries regarding eligibility or to start the process, first contact your student’s teacher. Anyone, including a parent or guardian, can refer a student for evaluation. It is recommended that this referral be made in writing.
- 504 Team Assembly: If a disability is suspected, the district will assemble a team knowledgeable about the student. This typically includes a parent, a teacher, and individuals who can interpret evaluation data and placement options.
- Evaluation & Placement: The team will review data from various sources—such as grades, medical reports, and teacher observations—to determine if the student qualifies for accommodations. Parental consent is required before any evaluation or placement action begins.
